Law and Order SVU season 20 casts George Newbern
Law and Order SVU season 20 has cast Scandal star George Newbern as a recurring character connected to Kelli Giddish’s Amanda Rollins.
Fresh off wrapping up his role on ABC‘s Scandal, George Newbern is bringing some drama to the upcoming season of Dick Wolf‘s Law & Order: SVU.
According to a report from Deadline, Newbern has been cast as the ex-boyfriend of Detective Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish), with whom he’ll reconnect during SVU season 20. The role will be recurring, so it’s a story over at least two episodes.
His character, Dr. Al Pollack, was referenced but not seen in this past season, when Rollins told a guest character how she’d discovered he was cheating on her. But Newbern’s casting proves that he won’t be out of Rollins’ life just yet.
The casting announcement didn’t mention which episodes will feature George Newbern, or how many episodes he’ll wind up being in, but his arrival is another plus for SVU season 20.

Newbern is coming off several seasons of Scandal, where he played B613 operative Charlie. He was promoted to series regular for the show’s final season, which just concluded and involved Charlie marrying Quinn Perkins (Katie Lowes).
He’s a frequent TV guest star whose other roles include NCIS, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY, and Castle, and he also has an extensive voice acting career.

Newbern’s a great choice for the role; he’s charming and has that everyman quality, but his recent work on Scandal just proved that he can venture to the dark side.
That’ll come in handy because clearly Dr. Al is not a great guy, but at the same time, audiences have to see what attracted Rollins to him in the first place—and care about the potential of their getting back together. If we’re not invested in his character, then it’s a waste of time for the fans and it reflects badly on the character of Rollins as well, if we wonder what she ever saw in him.
Trust Newbern to find something fresh and interesting to do with the character and make it worth everyone’s while.
Hopefully things go better for George Newbern during SVU season 20 than they did during the last season of Scandal, though:
