Look back at where Chicago Med began this summer. Read our retrospective on the ninth episode as we rewatch Chicago Med season 1, episode 9.

Over the One Chicago summer break, we’re looking back at where it all began by rewatching the first seasons of our shows—and today we’re revisiting Chicago Med season 1, episode 9.

If you want to rewatch this episode along with us, you can find Chicago Med season 1 on iTunes and DVD.

Episode nine is entitled “Choices,” as in our characters have some major ones to make here, and it’s no spoiler to say that some of them don’t make the right decisions. After all, if everything went well, there’d be no drama.

So who takes the fall? That’d be Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss).

More from One Chicago Center

Chicago Med has already established Will as the doctor who leaps before he looks, making decisions from his gut and having to deal with consequences after the fact.

That makes this storyline the tipping point for what’s been building through the first eight chapters.

When Will circumvents a DNR order, he’s yanked off his case and hit with the lawsuit that will continue to be an issue for him—not only during the rest of this season, but even into Chicago Med season 2 (with his insurance issues).

That alone makes “Choices” worth a second watch, because this is a development that shapes the way we look at Will Halstead for the rest of the series. One wonders if now, with three seasons in the past and as the attending physician, if Will looks back on the decision he made here differently or if he’d still do the same thing. Watch the key scene yourself and reconsider it:

Also in this episode, Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) treats a bipolar patient, which puts some stress on him as well. Choi’s storylines are always some of the more thought-provoking on the show, since he as a character looks very seriously at all of the dilemmas involved in each case. He’s inclined to ask tough questions, and so tough questions get explored through his stories.

Choi has a choice to make himself about how to treat his patient, and what he does contrasts the development for Will. One sees how they have different ways of looking at the world, but both of them share the same dedication to their work, too. They prove that just because you don’t agree with the expected line doesn’t mean you’re not a good doctor. Yet at the same time, you have to stand by those decisions.

Rewatch this episode on iTunes and DVD, and see if you’d make the same decisions that happen here. Two seasons later, does hindsight change how it looks? The answer is probably different for different fans.
