Chicago PD season 6

As far as excitement goes, Chicago PD might have an uphill battle next season. The show upset a lot of people with its decision to kill Alvin Olinsky (Elias Koteas) in the fifth season finale—to the point where many fans are still hoping that Olinsky’s death was faked, even though the other cast members have spoken openly about Koteas not being part of season six.

It’s a decision that the show will likely regret, and it’s hard to get excited about the show after it, not only because of the controversial choice—but just because the past season ended on such a down note. Audiences know we’re going back to an Intelligence Unit that’s going to be a sadder, possibly darker place (although Chicago PD has always been the darkest of the three One Chicago programs).

The show has not added a new detective to try and fill the vacancy on the team yet, but it has cast a new frenemy for Intelligence in the person of Anne Heche, coming off of her role as the boss on the NBC military drama The Brave. That comes with a little bit of skepticism as well, because her character description sounds like it could be pretty similar to the Denny Woods character who was just written out.

Audiences need a season that will make an entirely clean break and move forward rather than pull out similar stories for another year. So in terms of how much anticipation there is, Chicago PD sits as the series we’re not quite sure about—though given that it’s also the franchise’s most solid in the ratings, it could easily overcome the wariness and deliver another reliable year. We’ll have to wait and see.
