Look back at where Chicago Med began this summer. Read our retrospective on the eleventh episode as we rewatch Chicago Med season 1, episode 11.

Over the One Chicago summer break, we’re looking back at where it all began by rewatching the first seasons of our shows—and today we’re revisiting Chicago Med season 1, episode 11.

If you want to rewatch this episode along with us, you can find Chicago Med season 1 on iTunes and DVD.

Episode eleven is called “Intervention” and that title could be applied to a few of the episode’s storylines—most notably the main plot, as the doctors wonder if they should step in when a patient’s desires don’t seem to be in his best interest.

But this is the episode where the show hits on a point that audiences have seen numerous times if you’ve watched any other medical drama: that it’s the patient who ultimately has the final word on their medical care.

It’s a tough lesson to learn, particularly for Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell), who’s still figuring out how to work in the world of cardiothoracic surgery.

By now, he’s starting to figure it out but for fans, it’s interesting to watch Connor when he was less sure of how the system worked—but still just as sure of himself, his skills, and his judgment.

Connor believes that he can save his patient from the life-threatening heart issue, but the patient won’t let him proceed.

So our hero goes up the ladder to his new supervisor Dr. David Downey (recurring guest star Gregg Henry), but instead of getting a reprieve he gets another slice of Downey’s wisdom. It’s an uncomfortable scene for Connor, but a wonderful scene for the fans to watch because of the two actors involved; revisit it by playing the video below:

Back downstairs in the Emergency Department, Chicago Med packs “Intervention” with a pair of truly gross cases. Dr. Sarah Reese (Rachel DiPillo) works with Connor’s girlfriend Dr. Sam Zanetti (recurring guest star Julie Berman) on flesh-eating bacteria, while Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) gets contagious bacteria—not the same kind either.

This is definitely an episode that makes you want to take advantage of some hand sanitizer after watching.

The subplots aren’t as interesting as the main story, but it’s an episode that is important in the relationship between Connor and Downey, and therefore where Connor will go when the first season ends. In that sense, this Chicago Med season 1 installment is more worth watching the second time around. Check it out again on iTunes and DVD.
