Look back at where Chicago Med began this summer. Read our retrospective on the twelfth episode as we rewatch Chicago Med season 1, episode 12.

Over the One Chicago summer break, we’re looking back at where it all began by rewatching the first seasons of our shows—and today we’re revisiting Chicago Med season 1, episode 11.

If you want to rewatch this episode along with us, you can find Chicago Med season 1 on iTunes and DVD.

This episode is called “Guilty” and it’s another of the season’s best episodes, featuring a perfect performance from Marlyne Barrett as Maggie Lockwood.

Maggie puts her job, and in fact her freedom, on the line to protect the rights of a patient even though that patient is reprehensible—and it shows us a lot about her, as well as a lot about why this show works.

Things start off with a bang when Maggie refuses to let the police get a blood sample from a patient who is under investigation for DUI.

It may be upholding hospital policy, but it also gets her arrested for obstruction of justice, thanks to a cop who’s overzealous. Which, even that is kind of understandable, because the DUI driver hit another officer.

Marlyne Barrett is superb in this episode, because Maggie won’t let anything get in the way of doing what’s right for her patient.

That’s something that defines her character, and something that we saw again during Chicago Med‘s third season, when she almost lost her job for performing a procedure that saved someone’s life but going against hospital policy. Here, she’s willing to go to jail to uphold the patient’s rights:

Not only is Maggie’s story interesting on its own merits, “Guilty” also presents a solid B-story as we see the aftereffects through Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell). Rhodes is the surgeon on the case, and he’s furious when the kid and his father are both flippant about what happened.

The audience finds out why, as Rhodes goes to get Maggie out of jail and confesses that he, too, once got off the hook for a crime—while a friend took the fall. It’s an excellent scene for both of the actors, and tells us a lot about each character. It’s one of the best scenes of the season, even if it’s not the biggest.

“Guilty” is a solid episode all the way around, and it’s no wonder that it’s one of the rare episodes to get a sequel; the show followed up on this with the equally moving “Heart Matters” during the second season. Definitely watch this Chicago Med episode again on iTunes and DVD.
