Chicago Med season 1, episode 13 rewatch: Us
Look back at where Chicago Med began this summer. Read our retrospective on the thirteenth episode as we rewatch Chicago Med season 1, episode 13.
Over the One Chicago summer break, we’re looking back at where it all began by rewatching the first seasons of our shows—and today we’re revisiting Chicago Med season 1, episode 13.
If you want to rewatch this episode along with us, you can find Chicago Med season 1 on iTunes and DVD.
“Us” is the title of this installment, and it’s one of the stranger ones in the first season, while it also starts an important personal storyline for April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta).
The primary medical cases in the episode are eyebrow-arching, whether it’s the husband who is determined to harvest eggs from his late wife, or the guy who is trying to get rid of his own arm by any means necessary.

Those stories create some “are you kidding me” moments, but chances are Chicago Med fans will remember this episode best for its third story, which would have effects lasting through the rest of the first season and into the second.
“Us” is the episode that introduces Tate Jenkins (played by Deron J. Powell), when his son is brought into the hospital after swallowing magnets. April then befriends both father and son.
Of course, April and Tate would begin dating, then become engaged and move in together, before she was expecting their first child in season 2.
But after building all that up, Chicago Med tore it down during the second season, with April losing the baby and deciding to break things off with Tate in the aftermath.
By the end of the second season, she was kissing her current boyfriend, Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee). And coming off the third season, where Chexton was a significant focus, rewatching this episode is odd—we’re not used to seeing April with Tate anymore, and it takes a second to remember that’s the man she almost married.
Plus, you see the differences in her early relationship with Tate, as opposed to how she interacts with Ethan at the start of their relationship. And then there’s this:
Another interesting thing about “Us” is that we see Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) and Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) working together. We don’t see that very often on this show, so it’s fun to look back at this episode and enjoy that team-up.
While the attempted arm removal and the late spouse might be a bit weird, there are some neat things in this episode that the audience can appreciate again in retrospect, since two seasons later we don’t see them (or see them as much, in the case of Connor and Natalie handling a case). Find this episode again on iTunes and DVD.
