MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS:
Connor Rhodes’ life was a mess during Chicago Med season 3, as his personal life got mixed up with what was happening in his career, and it all went a little crazy.
The major arc for him in the season was his flirtation with new arrival Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) and how that was complicated by the fact that they had to compete with one another at work.
As such, almost every work interaction he had with Ava involved some kind of commentary or flirtation, and the one-night stand they eventually did have was complicated by their vying for one position on a valuable surgery.
Plus, his dad hit on her, too, as creepy as that was.
Connor ended the season being offered a position at the Mayo Clinic, while Ava accused him of trying to steal the spotlight all along. So will he stay or will he go?

ANALYSIS:
There was a lot of change for Connor Rhodes during this season of Chicago Med, and that did not go over well with many fans. Any dissatisfaction was understandable—Connor went from being our show’s “white knight” of sorts in a serious relationship, to turning into a player and becoming professionally ruthless.
A lot of what we saw in the third season didn’t jibe with the Connor fans knew and loved, like the episode where he exchanged maybe two sentences with a lawyer and yet was seen leaving the hospital with her that night—in the exact same episode where his previous one-night stand had caused him enough trouble. At times, it was as if he’d lost his way.
But by the end of the season, Connor’s true colors shone through anyway. He took a hit for Ava in “An Inconvenient Truth” when he had no reason to, and he saved the day in “The Tipping Point” as that’s what he does. Hopefully he’s gotten the post-Robin recklessness out of his system, as he definitely had a wild ride in season 3.
PROGNOSIS:
The story Chicago Med was telling with Connor Rhodes in the third season was kind of obvious: the idea that Robin’s departure sent him into a spiral where he decided to start playing the field, in every respect. The problem is, that storyline wasn’t very flattering for him.
Granted, that’s not all the character’s fault. With the show’s emphasis on establishing Ava and on building up her sexual tension with Connor, how Connor was written was affected as a result. One example of this was Ava being hit on by Cornelius Rhodes in “The Parent Trap.” It was an awkward and creepy storyline, but clearly written for the purpose of making Connor jealous.
Or when Connor and Ava were fighting over a donor heart in “Best Laid Plans” it felt like Connor was more aggressive than he had ever been before. But again, that played into the competitive relationship the show wanted to build between the two.
It will be very interesting to see where Connor heads from here. Obviously, he’s not going to the Mayo Clinic, or Colin Donnell would be written out of another TV show. So why does he stay? Is the show going to continue to push his relationship with Ava? Has he learned from what felt like a hurt and reckless phase for him? There are so many questions left to be answered.
