Where we left off

The majority of the character development for Ethan Choi came in the form of another storyline about his personal life. Choi and April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) shared a kiss during the Chicago Med season 2 finale “Love Hurts” and when we rejoined them during season 3, they were in a serious relationship.

Choi had to navigate the perils of a relationship with a coworker, made more complicated by the fact that as a nurse, April was also his subordinate. The two started out wanting to keep their love life private, but eventually agreed to go public (and some fans would say they did a terrible job hiding it anyway).

The most recent season also introduced Choi’s estranged sister Emily Choi (recurring guest star Arden Cho), who had a penchant for poker playing, partying, and bad life decisions, not necessarily in that order.

Choi tried to reconcile with Emily, allowing her to stay at his apartment while she eventually got a job volunteering at the hospital. But when April was convinced Emily had stolen drugs from the hospital lockup during the mass shooting in “This Is Now” (and she was right), Emily disappeared only to end up as a patient in the season finale.

Choi ended the third season having to choose between bringing his sick but troublesome sister home to take further care of her, or having April be waiting at home when he got there. So what will he decide?
