What should happen

Ethan Choi will have to decide between his family and his girlfriend at the start of Chicago Med season 4, and no offense to April, but we’d like to see him choose the latter. Not because of any dislike of Chexton, but for a number of reasons that work out better in the long run.

The show has a history of not continuing family relationships once they’ve served their purpose in a particular episode, with the exception of Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) and his father, who still hangs around the hospital every now and then just to get on everyone’s nerves. Keeping Emily in the picture would be a change of pace, and a potential redemption story that plays better than the predictable outcome from last season where she turned not to have changed at all.

Beyond that, we don’t necessarily need to focus on Choi’s romantic life. He’s one of the smartest characters when it comes to making professional decisions, and that’s an unexplored direction to take him in. Both he and April deserve to move up the ranks at the hospital. That would be more valuable for them than another season of romantic issues.

There are other ships that Chicago Med can focus on, and unlike those ships, Chexton have shown they’ll get through anything anyway. So they can still exist while Choi continues to build his career and potentially helps steer the hospital.
