Where we left off
Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund) decided to look at a job in Puerto Rico after a disagreement with her husband Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer).
Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) were in a much happier place even though Stella moved out of Severide’s apartment.
And Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker) lost the race for fire commissioner to Carl Grissom (Gary Cole), even though Otis (Yuri Sardarov) had uncovered evidence that Grissom had been giving false statistics to the department to make himself look better.

Who’s out
- Monica Raymund, who chose not to return to the series after her contract expired at the end of season 6. Here’s how the show is writing out Dawson.
- DuShon Monique Brown, who played Chief Boden’s assistant Connie, passed away during the season.
Who’s in
- Annie Ilonzeh (Peppermint, the Charlie’s Angels TV reboot) has been cast as Emily Foster, the new paramedic on Ambulance 61.
- Stephen Boyer (NBC’s Trial & Error) has a recurring role as Jerry Gorsch, who is an Assistant Deputy Commissioner sent by Grissom to keep an eye on Firehouse 51.
- Kristen Gutoskie (Lethal Weapon) will play a new assistant at the firehouse.
What we know so far
- The new season will pick up shortly after the end of the previous season, with Dawson having taken the job in Puerto Rico, but still together with Casey.
- Foster is assigned to Firehouse 51 while Dawson is gone, similar to how Jake Cordova filled in for Otis while he was shot last season.
- Due to the passing of DuShon Monique Brown, the character of Connie will be written out of the series. Her replacement will be Kristen Gutoskie’s character, who reportedly is going to be interested in someone at the firehouse.
- Boyer’s character is also introduced as a new antagonist for Firehouse 51.
