Chicago Med’s season premiere is here, so what should One Chicago fans expect? Find out what to watch for in our Chicago Med season 4, episode 1 preview.

It’s finally time for new Chicago Med. And expectations are high for the fourth season, too, given how the last one ended on not one but multiple cliffhangers while falling victim to a packed NBC schedule.

The good news is, One Chicago fans don’t have to wait until midseason this time. And all of those unanswered questions get some form of clarity in Wednesday’s opening episode.

The episode is called “Be My Better Half” and as you’ve probably guessed from that title, the sort of unofficial theme is about pairs—mostly couples, but there are some other relationships in the mix as well.

Manstead fans will particularly enjoy the episode because not only does the show reveal whether or not Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) is engaged, but her relationship remains one of the big plotlines in the premiere.

That’s another, unintentional theme as well. With so much to resolve from the third season, this episode is absolutely packed with guest stars (more of them than either of the other premieres).

Fans will see a lot of both new and familiar faces, while the show spends most of Wednesday tying up all of its loose ends from last year. Those include the much-appreciated return of Dr. Isidore Latham (Ato Essandoh), though unfortunately that may be the most we see of him.

Overall, the Chicago Med season premiere feels as much like an extra third season finale as it does the start of season four.

Amongst all the personal issues being resolved, though, there are still cases of the week and the hospital’s financial concerns are still a problem—an even more prominent problem than before.

Fans should particularly look out for the back and forth that takes place between Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) and Gwen Garrett (recurring guest star Heather Headley). Their scenes are completely different from the generally boring interactions between Goodwin and Peter Kalmick last season. These are the scenes that we wanted to see before, that really dig into the business of health care.

Plus, Heather Headley is a fantastic addition to Chicago Med. She’s another impressive talent from the stage world; she won a Tony Award in 2000 for the musical Aida, and that’s just one thing she has accomplished on a long resume. Regardless of what direction the show takes Gwen, it’s going to be a pleasure just to watch Headley work.

The Chicago Med season finale doesn’t quite reveal enough about where the show is going, but it does give fans everything they’ve been waiting for.
