What should fans expect from this week’s episode of SVU? Find out what to watch for in our Law and Order SVU season 20, episode 3 preview.

This week’s Law and Order SVU episode will appeal to Dick Wolf and One Chicago fans alike, uniting Wolf’s two franchises, albeit in a more supporting way.

Thursday’s installment “Zero Tolerance” features a decent-sized storyline for Peter Stone (Philip Winchester), because he’s supporting Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) in the main story.

It also includes a guest appearance by Stone’s former boss, Mark Jefferies (special guest star Carl Weathers), reprising his role from Chicago Justice.

That all sounds fantastic, but how sizeable will either development really be, and what should fans honestly expect to watch?

Stone, quite frankly, needs some more screen time after last week’s premiere episode put him in a very bad light.

He may be still mourning the death of his sister, and that’s fine—but showing him as a guy who could hardly stay out of a bar and was having drunken threesomes felt like it was taking his breakdown a step too far.

Giving him a storyline in this next episode gives SVU season 20 a chance to move on from that. What fans don’t know is how, and how much?

The arrival of Mark Jefferies could mean anything. Is he there because Peter asks him for help, or could he be opposing whatever Peter is trying to do—which is not uncommon when characters return in the Law & Order universe? How many prosecutors turned defense attorneys have TV fans seen in this canon?

And regardless of whatever the professional setup is, will Jefferies be given the opportunity to say anything about Peter’s personal situation? How much would he know? Will we learn any details of how Peter made exit from Chicago—which has been one of the question marks still hanging over his character?

This guest appearance could answer a lot of questions and be incredibly beneficial, but it all comes down to if SVU uses Carl Weathers to his full potential and if the writers want to spend that much time on Peter Stone. We’ll find out later tonight.
