PROS
Doing the crossover so early in the season worked perfectly with NBC’s new vision of a unified One Chicago—what better way to promote the franchise being entirely on one night, than doing an event that takes place over the whole night?
There were plenty of dramatic moments through the entire three hours, whether it was Severide going out the window, Stella’s fate, or Halstead being shot.
Some of those moments also went to characters who are usually more supporting players, like Mouch (Christian Stolte) and Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson).
Once again, NBC had a great way to deliver the three hours, presenting it as one three-hour movie rather than the individual episodes of each show. That was helpful to keep the audience in the story for as long as possible.

CONS
Doing the crossover early in the season felt a little like it was interrupting each show’s individual plot. Every One Chicago show featured a major change in the season premiere, but all of those newly raised issues were then immediately set aside to focus on the crossover’s plot.
Whereas, having it later in the season would’ve allowed for those interesting stories to play out more, and then there’d be more space to pause for crossover action later on.
Some of the dramatic moments in the episodes felt set up for drama’s sake, rather than being an organic part of the storytelling. Was anyone surprised that the Chicago PD episode ended with Jay Halstead chasing down his father’s killer, alone?
The general plot felt too similar to the Chicago Crossover from 2017. While some of that is just a part of tying the three shows together—there has to be a fire for Chicago Fire to fit in—did this crossover really need to be another Chicago PD family member in danger? And then to kill off that person again?
Overall, the first crossover of the 2018-2019 season was definitely entertaining for One Chicago fans, and delivered a lot worth talking about, but it could also have been handled a bit differently to make it even better.
