What should fans watch for in this week’s Chicago Fire? Get ready for tonight’s episode with our Chicago Fire season 7, episode 5 preview.

Things on Chicago Fire continue to simmer, but it sounds like this week’s episode is going to push the temperature up to boiling. And what about another new character coming into the firehouse?

Wednesday’s episode “A Volatile Mixture” features an A-story for Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer). That’s good news, because Casey hasn’t had a ton to do this season once the premiere dealt with his wife’s departure.

But the plotline itself could be bad news. It involves a trailer park fire that needs investigation, but instead of working with his colleagues at Firehouse 51, he seeks help from a reporter.

This episode introduces Kate Villanova as Naomi Graham, and she’ll be a recurring character. So is she actually going to help Casey, and what does the show plan on doing with her?

Casey sometimes has a tendency to have his good intentions get him in over his head. We saw it when he slept with Chief Pridgen’s ex-wife, and we saw it when he got into politics and found himself caught up in all of that drama.

So it wouldn’t be surprising if Naomi isn’t just there to help him. She could try to use him to get a scoop of her own, or not tell him something that he needs to know.

Of course, some Chicago Fire fans will wonder if she’s being introduced as a new love interest for Casey. There’s no evidence of that being the plan at all, but it goes without saying that idea would be even worse.

Casey could use a friend right now, but why not team him up with one of the other firefighters? What can Naomi do that somebody at Firehouse 51 can’t? That’ll be a big question that Chicago Fire needs to answer in this episode. Watch a clip of the trailer park fire to get a preview of this storyline:

In other news, “A Volatile Mixture” continues the season’s ongoing subplot about the bureaucratic problems Firehouse 51 is going through. One Chicago viewers have figured out by now that it will only be a matter of time before Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) goes off.

Could this be the episode, and if so, what will the consequences be? From a viewer’s standpoint, it’s always entertaining when Boden gets to explode, because Walker is so good at it. But from a canon point of view, Boden has already clashed with management a lot. One wonders how many times he can do that before he winds up suspended again—or worse.

And what about last week’s subplot with Tyler? Tye White was also billed as a recurring guest so we haven’t seen the last of his character. Is the show determined to set up another love triangle? There’s a lot of uncertainty around Chicago Fire, and this episode really needs to start clearing it up.
