Chicago Fire season 7, episode 5 takeaways: A Volatile Mixture
What should One Chicago fans learn from this week’s Chicago Fire? Look closer at last night’s episode with our Chicago Fire season 7, episode 5 takeaways.
What did One Chicago fans learn from this week’s Chicago Fire episode? Here’s what we took away from this week’s installment, “A Volatile Mixture.”
“A Volatile Mixture” featured Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) putting on his investigator hat one more time as he teamed up with a reporter to figure out the cause of a trailer park blaze. But was the reporter a little sweet on Casey?
Meanwhile, Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) had a rough week between his ongoing jealousy issue and trying to go to bat for Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) as the brass took their next shot at the boss.
Below are our takeaways from this week’s episode:

1) What’s the deal with Naomi?
“A Volatile Mixture” introduced Naomi Graham (guest star Kate Villanova), a reporter looking for Casey’s aid about the trailer park fire. She was convinced that it was one of many, and the two teamed up to reveal the real cause.
But in their final scene together, sitting at a diner reading the resulting article, did anyone get the vibe that Naomi might be interested in Casey as more than a source? At least she was certainly bashful with him.
Let’s hope we’re wrong, because Naomi is due back in a future episode—and if Chicago Fire tries to put Casey in a new relationship just episodes after the exit of his wife, there are going to be a lot of fans who are understandably upset.

2) How many secrets does Foster have?
Another fact about Emily Foster’s (Annie Ilonzeh) backstory came out this week, as Chicago Fire revealed that she is bisexual. Foster told Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) that she’s had “boyfriends and girlfriends” in the past.
This is not a huge deal, especially not on this show, where Leslie Shay (Lauren German) was an out lesbian. But it’s one more piece of an increasingly cryptic puzzle. Viewers still don’t have the full story about why Foster became a paramedic; it feels like she wasn’t telling the whole truth there, and Chicago Fire season 7 hasn’t given us reason to think otherwise.
Plus, is that why multiple characters have had an adverse reaction to seeing her, or is that another separate issue, too? It’s great that the show is making an effort to make Foster interesting, and to flesh her out so the audience warms to her, but at the same time, let’s hope the show isn’t adding more secrets/reveals just for the sake of having them.
3) Is Severide’s dad doomed?
One of the final scenes in “A Volatile Mixture” involved Benny Severide (Treat Williams), as his son went to him for help with the Gorsch problem. When the duo said their goodbyes, which fans can watch by playing the clip above, they really did feel like goodbyes. When you add this scene to the promo for next week’s episode, it seems like Chicago Fire might be on the verge of killing off the senior Severide.
Hopefully we’re wrong, but if we’re right this just continues a sad trend in the One Chicago fandom overall. Pat Halstead has already been killed this season. An hour after this episode aired, Bob Ruzek got shot. Could we slow our roll with the killing or injuring of family members for dramatic effect? There has to be some other type of story that can be told.
