Chicago Med’s characters are damned if they do and damned if they don’t this week. Here’s what happened in Chicago Med season 4, episode 6.

The doctors and nurses of Chicago Med have had more turbulence than an X-Wing fighter trying to blow up the Death Star, but the latest Chicago Med season 4 episode just gave us all the sad stories.

“Lesser of Two Evils” kicks off with Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) not so enthused about his joint bachelor-bachelorette party. Or his undercover work. So, business as usual there, but at least he came back inside to help with a couple injured in a car accident.

Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) told Will that she believed the wife was being abused by the husband prior to the accident, which is a particularly uncomfortable case to take on when the two of you are about to get married.

When Natalie brings the woman in for her MRI, she tries to ask her about her bruises. The woman says she met her husband online and agreed to come with him to Chicago. It was his latest attack on her that caused the accident.

But she doesn’t want to report the abuse because she’s in the country illegally, so doing so would get her deported back to the Ukraine.

We need a happier subplot, STAT! In another room, Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) and April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) are checking on a young girl whose parents thought she just had a stomach bug. Choi thinks it’s cirrhosis. Uh, what?

Then his sister Emily (recurring guest star Arden Cho) wanders through the ED, so that Choi and April can talk about how insane it is that Emily is still visiting Bernie even after learning he lied to her.

Choi takes a break from being annoyed at her sister again to tell Gabby and her family that she has Wilson’s disease—which is hereditary. She’ll need a liver transplant.

Well, that wasn’t happier at all.

Med student Terry McNeal has become the errand boy for new ED chief Dr. Lanik (recurring guest star Nate Santana), which does not go unnoticed by Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell). He makes a snappy aside about it, before all three jump in to help a construction worker.

Lanik pressures Terry to perform a procedure he’s not ready for, which naturally screws it up and makes the situation worse. Now Connor will definitely have some more words, and they’re going to be choice.

April’s blood tests reveal that his patient’s father is not actually her biological father, which gives Chicago Med its weekly dose of medical surprise. Mom explains that Gabby was adopted, but her daughter doesn’t know that.

Speaking of surprises, Will and Natalie tell Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) about their case and while she calls an immigration attorney, they inform their patient Daria about the extent of her injuries. They also tell her husband that he’s not going to be allowed to see her, though not why, as Will wants to throttle him instead.

Connor and Lanik continue to butt heads as they take their patient into surgery. Connor finally lets loose, and says exactly what we’re all thinking:

"Connor: Where do you get off treating him like that?"

Lanik argues that he’s head of the Emergency Department so he has all the power. Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) has overheard the argument and provides no help whatsoever.

As for Terry, he’s working hard at practicing the procedure he’s screwed up, so Connor seeks him out and gives him a pep talk. Good Guy Connor rears his head yet again.

Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) is surprised when Gabby’s mom asks him if a drug addict can help with her daughter’s liver transplant. But before he can ask for clarification, Gabby begins to crash. Charles then finds Mom and Dad having a disagreement in the parking lot, so they’re both acting weird.

After a failed attempt to get Gabby’s adoption records, Charles and Choi confront her parents. It comes out that Gabby’s formally adopted; they “saved” her from a drug addict. Choi warns them that this is kidnapping, and they’ll have to report it.

Elsewhere, Goodwin tells Natalie that the immigration attorney informed her that Daria can petition for legal residency, without her husband’s approval or even knowledge. Daria’s husband, however, has now moved into full-blown creepy territory. He wants his wife discharged. In front of our doctors, he tells her to tell them that’s what she wants, and she does.

Meanwhile, Connor’s patient crashes and it’s even worse for Terry—because of his botched work earlier, Connor now has to amputate one of the man’s legs. Lanik believes the patient’s as good as dead anyway. This episode of Chicago Med is quickly climbing the downer scale.

"Connor: You’re a coward. Get over yourself…As long as this guy has a fighting chance, I’m going to do everything I have to save him."

Did we mention that Connor Rhodes is awesome? But before One Chicago fans can fully enjoy that, Chicago Med yanks us back to Daria’s storyline, as it’s her turn to crash. Will pronounces her dead while her husband looks on, but that seems awfully quick.

When Natalie and Will inform her husband that an autopsy is necessary, he squirms and then runs away before the medical examiner can question him. That’s okay, because she’s not actually dead. Our heroes just faked her death to allow her to get away from the abusive idiot.

We’re thrilled but Goodwin isn’t; she chews them both out thoroughly and says both of them will be fired the next time they do something like this.

That’s one happy ending (sort of), but there’s other plots to be resolved in “Lesser of Two Evils.” Police arrive to take Gabby’s not-actually-parents into custody while she cries, and Lanik gloats when Connor’s patient is actually braindead. He actually tells Terry “you should be happy” about the situation. Connor responds appropriately:

Gabby rejects her actual mother when she arrives at Chicago Med, clean and actually wanting to thank them for saving her child’s life. That reaction stuns Choi and Charles. But Real Mom could now save Gabby’s life.

That plot ends abruptly while we’re going to cut to Manstead on the way to their party and then Choi deciding he should apologize to Emily. The case has made him realize that while he doesn’t understand what she’s thinking, she has to do what she believes is best for herself and her baby.

Emily says she and Bernie are moving to Las Vegas, which is a great choice for a guy who still has a whole other family and a woman with a gambling problem. Luckily, Choi does not explode again. He’s Zen with this.

Time for another heart-to-heart between Connor and Terry. Connor tries to reassure him again and tells him that if he leaves everything else at the door, he’s going to be fine. He then finds Ava so they can go party with Will, Natalie and everyone else.

But Will decides this would also be a good time to tell Jay he’s going to defy the task force and treat Ray Burke at the hospital—even if it blows the undercover operation. You have the worst timing ever, Will Halstead. First your proposal, and now this. The worst timing ever.
