What should One Chicago fans learn from this week’s Chicago Fire? Look closer at last night’s episode with our Chicago Fire season 7, episode 6 takeaways.

What did One Chicago fans learn from this week’s Chicago Fire episode? Here’s what we took away from this week’s installment, “All The Proof.”

“All The Proof” featured the moment fans had been waiting for: Jerry Gorsch (recurring guest star Steven Boyer) was finally ousted from Firehouse 51. But it came at the cost of Benny Severide’s life, as Benny (Treat Williams) had a stroke not long after pulling the strings to make it happen.

If you missed any of this week’s episode or just want a refresher on the events that we’re about to discuss, you can catch up with our Chicago Fire recap.

Below are our takeaways from this week’s episode:

More from One Chicago Center

1) It’s not a good season for parents

We said this last week in our Chicago PD breakdown but it bears repeating: it sucks to be a parent in the One Chicago franchise.

Benny Severide is dead. This comes just one week after Bob Ruzek (Jack Coleman) was shot.

And just a month after Pat Halstead (Louis Herthum) was killed off, too.

In six episodes, three One Chicago fathers have been either injured or killed. That’s an odd statistic, but it’s even more odd within such a short time frame.

Even if there’s a time skip between episodes, it’s still how the audience experiences it that really matters, because to us it’s happening in real time. And there hasn’t been mention of a time jump either, anyway, which makes it even worse.

What was the point in killing Benny off? In fact, if he’d been alive after saving the firehouse from Gorsch, that might have been even cooler—Kelly could’ve started to look at his dad differently and maybe they’d reconcile a little bit. But alas, it wasn’t to be. And the show may regret it.

2) Will there be a Boden vs. Grissom showdown after all?

When Gorsch was introduced, it was made clear that he was there at the behest of new boss Carl Grissom—but have Chicago Fire viewers noticed that Grissom hasn’t been seen at all during this new season?

To be fair, this could be due to the fact that Gary Cole is a super-busy actor and maybe he’s just not available. But with Gorsch out of the way, what does that mean for Firehouse 51? Especially since Benny’s argument was that Boden means a lot to his son, will Grissom reconsider his own opinion on Boden, too?

Or now that he doesn’t have someone at the firehouse to do his dirty work, will he show up there himself sometime? It would be meaningful for Grissom to turn up and either have that showdown or bury the hatchet, so let’s see if it eventually happens.

3) What exactly is Dawsey now?

One line in “All The Proof” had us stumbling a bit. Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) said he wasn’t sure if he and Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund) were getting divorced or just separated. Given that she left him to make a permanent move to Puerto Rico, wouldn’t that imply a divorce? She’s in another part of the country, with no plans to come back!

It feels implausible for it to be a separation—is everyone going to hang on the possibility that at some point, months or years from now, Dawson will return to Chicago and they’ll be happy again? No one knows how long that could be and there’s no evidence that it’s ever going to happen.

Plus, let’s not tease heartbroken Dawsey fans by leaving that door open…unless, of course, you’re leaving it there to keep Naomi Graham (Kate Villanova) from making another move on Casey. Then we wouldn’t mind, because the only thing worse than Dawsey limbo is pushing the ship aside this fast.
