Chicago Fire season 7, episode 7 takeaways: What Will Define You
What should One Chicago fans learn from this week’s Chicago Fire? Look closer at last night’s episode with our Chicago Fire season 7, episode 7 takeaways.
What did One Chicago fans learn from this week’s Chicago Fire episode? Here’s what we took away from this week’s installment, “What Will Define You.”
“What You Don’t Know” was focused almost entirely on the funeral of Benny Severide and how Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) dealt with his death. Oh, and Brettonio fans probably didn’t like her subplot, because she might have a new love interest.
If you missed any of this week’s episode or just want a refresher on the events that we’re about to discuss, you can catch up with our Chicago Fire recap.

1) A good, but predictable, funeral
“What Will Define You” gave One Chicago its second on-screen funeral this season, after Alvin Olinsky’s memorial in the Chicago PD season premiere. And while both were tear-jerkers, this one was kind of predictable.
It was clear from the scene where the department rejected the request for Benny to have a full service that someone, somehow was going to come through at the end of the episode. That was a massive hint.
And Chicago Fire wasn’t going to have Severide get up in church and say anything other than good things about his father. The whole point of a memorial is to pay tribute.
Just like Benny’s last scene was a fairly obvious goodbye, this episode was very obvious about what emotional reaction it wanted not only from its characters, but the audience. It did give Benny a good sendoff, but it felt telegraphed.

2) Hey, Katie’s back!
Give props to the Chicago Fire writers room for remembering Katie Nolan and making sure that Brittany Curran was a part of this episode. Fans have been asking about Katie for years, so it was doubly important to see her here. It would’ve been weird if she wasn’t at her dad’s funeral, and we finally got to catch up with her, too.
She’s doing really well for herself in Denver, so it doesn’t seem likely that we’ll see her that often on this show, but perhaps she can drop by a little more frequently. Especially with Katie and Jennifer now being the only family Kelly has, why not develop that half-sibling relationship more in a way that doesn’t involve her being harmed somehow?
3) Is there a new Brett ship on the horizon?
Is it just us, or is Chicago Fire really going for this idea of Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) dating new chaplain Kyle Sheffield (recurring guest star Teddy Sears)? When Brett turned down his number in a past episode, it seemed like just a throwaway line.
But with their whole awkward conversation near the end of this episode, now it seems like flirting between them. Even if it was outside of the memorial service, which wasn’t the best place for that scene; Brett couldn’t have come back to Kyle’s office after delivering her speech to Erica?
Brett’s whole subplot was kind of odd anyway, in that the episode never presented any concrete proof to back her up. We were just supposed to assume that Brett was right because she had this feeling, and then she turned out to be right…off-screen. But if she’s getting a new love interest, it will not make fans of Brettonio happy.
And does she even need one? What about letting them get to know each other before pairing these two off? Or, you know, actually letting someone on this show be single for a while? Anyway, keep an eye on these two because this seems like the start of something.
