What should One Chicago fans learn from this week’s Chicago Med? Look closer at last night’s episode with our Chicago Med season 4, episode 7 takeaways.

What did One Chicago fans learn from this week’s Chicago Med episode? Here’s what we took away from this week’s installment, “The Poison Inside Us.”

“The Poison Inside Us” featured a chemical attack on the hospital from the disgruntled widower of a patient who’d been treated by Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee). Not only was that a surprise but so was the return of Choi’s first season love interest, Vicki Glass (guest star Cynthia Addai-Robinson).

If you missed any of this week’s episode or just want a refresher on the events that we’re about to discuss, you can catch up with our Chicago Med recap.

Below are our takeaways from this week’s episode:

More from One Chicago Center

1) Connor and Ava’s drama was a dud

After creating this big secret for Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) and all this tension as it sat there for six whole episodes, Chicago Med absolutely did not pay it off this week.

It essentially gave Ava an pass for her behavior, because she went and did a selfless thing that saved a patient, so Connor wound up more focused on that.

And when she told him she was the one who’d gone to his dad—also kind of important—he just kissed her.

What could’ve been a great, tense episode that saw Ava take a fall, and her relationship with Connor evolve, wound up pushing most of the drama aside in favor of romance instead.

That’s a huge missed opportunity. And speaking of other plot ideas, did any fans think it might have been even worse if Connor’s dad had still been in the hospital when the chemicals were let out? That would’ve been a storyline. But somehow, Cornelius Rhodes continues to escape One Chicago’s habit of punishing people’s dads.

2) April needs to get a reality check

We get what Chicago Med was going for with April’s (Yaya DaCosta) behavior in this episode. She’s still in love with Choi, so she risks her life to get the drugs that help keep him alive. That’s romantic and all, but it was so incredibly unrealistic.

The chemical spill is supposed to be this terrible thing, but April can run into the hospital with only her arm over her nose and mouth and she shows no effects whatsoever?

Granted, she wasn’t in there for an extended period of time, but if it’s so bad, she should at least be coughing. Anything to show that she’d just run into a room full of toxic chemicals.

Especially when a previous scene showed Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) being told that he wasn’t able to leave his OR, it seemed questionable that he couldn’t duck into another room but she could run into one just fine.

And her righteousness about not “fighting for” Choi was a bit grating, too, even if we understood where it was coming from. She did apologize, so give her credit for that, but once again it felt like she was totally blind when someone close to her was involved (see: her behavior when Noah did something ill-advised).

3) Why is Vicki here?

The big reveal in this Chicago Med episode was the return of Vicki, Choi’s former Navy colleague who became his girlfriend during the first season, before she shipped out again. Now, that is fine and dandy; she was a great character. But what’s the show got planned for her?

If Vicki is just back to bring back a good character, and there’s going to be a proper storyline that involves her, that’s awesome. Cynthia Addai-Robinson would be great to have back. But if she’s just here to serve some kind of love triangle with Choi and April (who apparently broke up after the end of last season; did anyone else not think that was clear until now?), then it’s not worth it.

This show doesn’t need more love triangles. Did we not learn from Dr. Maya Frisch? Or the whole Will, Natalie, Nina and Jeff situation? These storylines just create unnecessary drama and usually don’t make good use of the actors. So let’s hope Vicki’s return goes differently.
