Chicago Med’s pair of improvised surgeries are One Chicago Center’s Moment of the Week for Nov. 7, from Chicago Med season 4.

This week’s One Chicago Moment of the Week honors go to Chicago Med, for not one but two of the most creative surgeries that have ever been seen on the show.

As soon as “The Poison Inside Us” had its chemical spill, One Chicago fans knew that somebody was going to get stuck in the hospital. It was easy drama, and plus, the episode would be kind of monotone if everyone was in the ambulance bay.

So instead we had Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) getting unexpected use out of his hybrid OR and Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) having to do an emergency C-section.

The first one was perfectly in character. Connor is the character who broke into Chicago Med when the last emergency locked everyone out of the hospital. He’s a mullet away from being this show’s version of MacGyver.

Colin Donnell is great in these off-center situations. From busting down a door to operating on a panda, when the plotline requires thinking outside the box, he runs with it.

It was good to see Connor and Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) working together with a minimum of arguing, and Ava going out on that proverbial limb right along with Connor—even if it knocked her out for a couple of seconds.

The denouement of this storyline was a letdown, but that’s another issue. The setup was pretty cool, and incredibly entertaining.

Elsewhere in the building, Natalie worked with Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) to deliver a pregnant woman’s baby under very adverse conditions. It not only took some improvising, but it wasn’t a huge shock when the audience found out that Dr. Charles had never actually called for help. He’d forced Natalie to do the procedure on her own.

Seeing Natalie and Charles working together was a wonderful change of pace for Chicago Med. The show pairs Natalie with her fiancee on so many cases that it gets rote, and especially since he no longer has a resident, Dr. Charles has kind of been the odd man out. So this story mixed it up for both characters, and the results were great.

Natalie is normally a very confident character—she has no problem telling her future husband what’s on her mind, or giving her opinion to patients or their family members when she thinks they aren’t doing the right thing. She was even arguing with Charles about doing the surgery in the first place! So to see her unsure of herself, that meant something. That was an aspect to her that we could explore more.

And overall, these plots were a nice feather in the cap of Chicago Med‘s doctors. They’re devoted to their patients so much that they will do whatever they have to, to save lives. That idea’s thrown around a lot on TV medical dramas, but in this episode we saw that with these doctors, it’s true. Now let’s see if any of them can save the world with a pencil and a paper clip…
