Chicago Med’s S. Epatha Merkerson celebrates her birthday
Chicago Med star S. Epatha Merkerson celebrates her birthday today, so we’re celebrating her and her character, hospital administrator Sharon Goodwin.
Today we’re saying happy birthday to S. Epatha Merkerson, who plays Chicago Med‘s head of the hospital, Sharon Goodwin!
S. Epatha Merkerson is a class act and one of the most tenured players in Dick Wolf‘s group. She not only has spent four seasons in One Chicago, but she was the longest cast member on the first Law & Order, and before that starred in Wolf’s sci-fi series Mann & Machine.
There’s a reason he keeps casting her in projects. She’s a tremendous actress, who has an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, two Tony Award nominations, and two Obie Awards. She’s great to watch in any role she plays.
But she’s developed a particular knack for being the boss. In all three of the TV shows we named above, she plays the supervisor—and as Chicago Med fans know, she’s really good at that.

The boss character can be a thankless role, just giving orders or reacting to whatever everyone else does, while they get most of the screen time. But S. Epatha Merkerson has defied that archetype.
She’s capable of laying down the law and dealing with the hospital bureaucracy, as One Chicago fans have seen multiple times throughout the third and fourth seasons.

It’s particularly been on display this season, with Goodwin having to fight Gwen Garrett (Heather Headley) and the hospital board while money keeps taking priority over patient care. Although Goodwin has also been tough with her doctors—she was last seen getting into a heated fight with Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) about the use of his hybrid OR.
At the same time, S. Epatha Merkerson brings a warmth that the series takes advantage of. She doesn’t feel like someone just sitting in her office or walking through a scene to tell off someone. It comes across like Goodwin genuinely cares about the people under her command, and wants the best for them as people, not just employees. That’s something the actress brings that helps set her character apart.
