Chicago Med showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider tease what’s to be expected from the Chicago Med season 4 fall finale.

With the Chicago Med midseason finale happening this week, Andrew Schneider and Diane Frolov have plenty to say about the big episode.

The executive producers and co-showrunners connected with One Chicago Center to discuss how excited they are about the Manstead wedding, and what else is going on in Wednesday’s episode that promises to pause the season with a bang.

Find out what Andrew and Diane had to tell us below, then don’t miss the Chicago Med fall finale tomorrow!

One Chicago Center: Let’s start with the event everyone’s talking about. After having built the relationship between Will and Natalie for three and a half seasons, what does it mean to you to write this wedding?

More from One Chicago Center

Andrew Schneider: [It’s] fantastic. The great thing about having a pairing that’s been on for a while is you have so much history to build on and tell stories off of. It was very satisfying.

OCC: What can we say is happening with the rest of the characters?

Diane Frolov: One case is a very, very emotional case that April and Ethan have.

Andrew Schneider: And Ava and Connor have a surgery that is also tied into Will’s storyline.

OCC: Speaking of that storyline, you have Will going undercover this season and you had Charles looking into Robert last season. How has it been to infuse Chicago Med with these storylines that are not primarily about medicine?

Diane Frolov: We love mysteries. On the show you get a lot of medical mysteries. So it’s just something that we like to do, and it’s also fun to get a little out of the hospital once in a while.

Andrew Schneider: When we do a story like Will treating this man who’s a gangster, we make it a medical story. It’s all about his ethical decisions as a doctor, and finding out what’s wrong with this guy, and trying to get him good care.

Diane Frolov: It allows us to have multiple layers to a story.

OCC: You wrote Dr. Sarah Reese out of the show in the Chicago Med season 4 premiere. Can you talk about writing Charles without Reese?

Andrew Schneider: We wanted to use that tragedy to show how he is now. To change him and have him be gunshy about mentoring. His last [mentorship] didn’t work out and he feels some responsibility.

Diane Frolov: We wanted to see the impact of that relationship and so we’ve been playing that out.

Andrew Schneider: As we go forward, we are going to learn some more about his past.

Diane Frolov: And about his emotional life.

OCC: The wedding would be a great opportunity to have Reese or other characters return. Are there any characters we’re going to see again, either in this episode or the second part of this season?

Andrew Schneider: We have some characters coming back. I don’t want to tip off whether Reese comes back or not, but some characters are going to come back in the back half. There’s a huge surprise at the wedding.

OCC: Could those possibly include Gwen Garrett or Cornelius Rhodes, now that the latter is a member of the hospital board?

Diane Frolov: We will bring back both him and [Gwen].

OCC: With Will and Natalie about to get married, their relationship will have gone almost as far as it can. Are there any other big romantic developments for other couples?

Andrew Schneider: There will be another wedding at the end of the season.

OCC: What have been your favorite parts of Chicago Med season 4 so far?

Diane Frolov: We just really love being able to follow and and develop these long-term stories, and the conflicts between people when they have different agendas. That’s very satisfying to us.

Andrew Schneider: We’ve done it with Ethan and April and Emily. We have it with Ava and Connor and the hybrid room, and Will and Natalie because of their romance and wedding and Ray Burke. We have Gwen and Goodwin.

Diane Frolov: We have a lot of rich areas that we can go into.

Andrew Schneider: With medical and ethical issues at the same time, which is great that we can do that.
