What should One Chicago fans learn from Chicago Med’s fall finale? Look closer at this week’s episode with our Chicago Med season 4, episode 9 takeaways.

What did One Chicago fans learn from this week’s Chicago Med episode? Here’s what we took away from this week’s installment, “Death Do Us Part.”

“Death Do Us Part” featured Dr. Natalie Manning’s (Torrey DeVitto) second wedding, which was ruined when she found out her husband-to-be was going into witness protection! And Ray Price got in one last jab at the team by having a key witness shot, leaving Will as the one person who could bring him down. Even though he almost got shot, too.

If you missed any of this week’s episode or just want a refresher on the events that we’re about to discuss, you can catch up with our Chicago Med recap.

Below are our takeaways from this week’s episode:

More from One Chicago Center

1) Is the Manstead wedding doomed?

That image of Natalie sobbing outside the church is going to stick with fans until the show returns, and is obviously meant to make audiences think that she may never see her fiance again. But Manstead might be in trouble for reasons other than the obvious.

Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) is now in witness protection, but what One Chicago viewers may not know is that can end; it’d be easy for him to come back in the next new episode or shortly thereafter, especially if Chicago Med has another time jump.

(If Nick Gehlfuss was planning a vacation, this is a great time for him to take it.)

But even when he comes back—because there’s no indication Nick is leaving the show—Manstead are still in trouble. Will has to tell Natalie everything, and she’s not going to be happy about it (though her happiness that he’s okay could temper that somewhat). Is she still going to want to marry him when she finds out he’s lied to her repeatedly?

This could go either way. She could get angry, like she did the last time he didn’t tell her something big. Or maybe Will will get that low-key, justice of the peace quick wedding he wanted, when she’s just glad to have him in one piece and decides to marry him before the FBI ruins it again.

2) Connor and Ava might actually work

We’ve been pretty critical of the pairing between Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) and Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) here, mostly because of the writing being so obvious in its setup and the way it affects both the characters. But “Death Do Us Part” showed that it does have potential.

Watching Ava try to console Connor at the end of the episode was a small, quiet but important moment. It was something that wasn’t purely physical and showed that the relationship isn’t as one-sided as it’s appeared in the past. It was Ava’s turn to be there for Connor, and it’s great to see that side of her, where she is able to support him. It proved that there’s more to them than flirting and bantering.

This was a truly genuine scene between them, and we need more of these in the rest of Chicago Med season 4.

3) How long can the hospital be dysfunctional?

On a less exciting note, the first nine episodes of this season continued a theme that Chicago Med started to introduce last season: the hospital’s financial crisis and how far people will go to solve it. A season and a half later, there still aren’t many answers.

There’s a new Chief Operating Officer, a new head of the Emergency Department, and at least one new member of the hospital board (hi, Cornelius). But there’s some concern about money in most of the episodes we’ve seen so far this season, and at this point, you wonder how long the show’s going to be able to sustain that before fans get sick of hearing it.

The hybrid OR was touted as a potential way to draw attention to the hospital, but apparently it’s losing money. So what’s next? And what can solve this problem in the back half of the season so the audience can move on? Not that there has to be a fairy godmother here, as every hospital has to worry about its bottom line, but the first part of this season has shown how that theme is only good for so long.
