Chicago Med’s protective custody is One Chicago moment of the week
Chicago Med putting Will Halstead into protective custody is One Chicago moment of the week for Dec. 5, from Chicago Med season 4.
This week’s One Chicago Moment of the Week honors go to Chicago Med, for getting the One Chicago fans excited about a Manstead wedding and then torpedoing the entire thing.
Viewers could probably guess that something was going to go wrong when Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) and Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) were preparing for their wedding. That’s the kind of drama TV shows love.
But the words “protective custody” probably didn’t pop into anybody’s head until that was exactly what Will found himself being ushered into.
The final moments of “Death Do Us Part” surprised Manstead shippers when a tearful Will, who was nearly shot to death by Ray Price’s son, was saved by his brother and then only reunited with Natalie long enough to tell her he was leaving again.

It’s not a game-changing scene; there’s no proof that Nick Gehlfuss is leaving Chicago Med, so it stands to reason that Will is going to be seen again (whether it’s in the spring premiere or shortly thereafter).
More notable is just the emotional gut-punch of it. All the Manstead fans who had been waiting for this moment instead finished the episode shocked, sad and disappointed.

And even if you don’t ship Will and Natalie, this is a plotline that the show spent three and a half seasons building. It’s asked viewers to follow this relationship for years, and then it wants us to wait just a little bit longer.
It was definitely a down note to end the first part of Chicago Med season 4 on, in an emotional sense. It’s hard not to think of Natalie being crushed and then having to explain to a church full of people that the wedding isn’t happening.
And then what about Will and his brother Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer)? What kind of a talk are they having since Jay pulled Will into this case? Plus, Will would have to say goodbye to his brother too. The more you think about it, the sadder it gets.
Congratulations, Chicago Med, for making everyone emotional and making us have to live with all that angst for the next month.
