Click through this slideshow to see our picks for the three biggest moments that happened in Chicago Fire season 7’s first nine episodes, starting with:
3. Foster’s arrival
What happened: Emily Foster (Annie Ilonzeh) comes to Firehouse 51 as the latest in a string of temporary replacements for Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund). However, the audience already knows that Foster’s the permanent new paramedic—something reaffirmed at the end of the first half when she turns down an offer to re-enroll in medical school to stay at 51.
The episode: “A Closer Eye” (episode 1)
Why it’s important: It’s always a big moment when an original cast member leaves, and Chicago Fire had a particularly high bar in this case, because so much of the show involved Dawson. From her role as Paramedic in Charge to her marriage, the absence of her character was definitely going to be felt and the character who came after was definitely going to be scrutinized.
The writers were pretty smart in the way they handled this, by sort of having Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) react the way the audience might be feeling. The episode mentions that Brett had gone through multiple other fill-ins before Foster’s arrival, not feeling that any of them were good enough.
She had no choice but to stick with Foster, who’s proven to be a good addition to the team—not only the character herself but how she’s opened up other stories for Brett. After all, it’s Foster’s old friend who is now Brett’s new love interest! And the arrival of Foster promoted Brett to being the new Paramedic in Charge. So Chicago Fire took its big challenge and made the best of it.
