Chicago Fire season 7: Ranking the biggest moments so far
2. Casey meets Naomi
What happened: After he responded to a fire at a trailer park that resulted in a woman’s death, Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) was approached by reporter Naomi Graham (recurring guest star Kate Villanova) to help with her investigation into the company that made the trailers. Although supposedly a great investigative reporter, Naomi kept asking Casey for help—while also flirting with him. The two just slept together in the midseason finale.
The episode: “All The Proof” (episode 6)
Why it’s important: The Casey and Naomi story took over a large portion of Chicago Fire season 6, and it will continue to do so for at least one more week because of the midseason cliffhanger. It feels a lot like the Hope story from last season—a strange woman arrives, gets attached to one of the main characters, and makes things a lot more complicated.
The Naomi story deserves some of the same criticism. If you’re a Dawsey fan, you probably feel irritated right now; while it was obvious the two would divorce at some point, to see Casey jump into a new relationship so quickly feels weird.
While he has a tendency to rush into romances (see: sleeping with Beth right after his first breakup with Dawson), this isn’t the same thing because it’s after he just got out of a marriage. It’s after he spent years with the woman who was supposed to be the love of his life—not just in his head, but in how the show presented it.
Even if you set aside that concern, it’s just nothing but trouble for Casey. Naomi has yet to be that interesting as a character. The fact she keeps asking him for help reads either like she isn’t as good at her job as the show wants her to be, or she’s making up a lot of excuses to be around him; both of those options aren’t flattering.
And no matter what happens in the midseason premiere, this is still going to be the relationship that caused Casey’s apartment to burn down. That’s not his fault—that’s because he got involved with Naomi. This fire is a jaw-dropping moment for the season, but you can’t remember it without being aware of what caused it.
