Chicago Med season 4 midseason report: Daniel Charles
What’s next
When Chicago Med picks up, Charles is one of the characters who hasn’t had their own individual episode yet. He needs a feature story—and the writers also have to figure out what that story is about. Will it just be a case of the week he takes the lead on? Or could it be something that has a personal angle?
There was the possibility that Charles’ daughter Robin (Mekia Cox) could return this season, and while nothing has been confirmed yet, that would be a good start. Since Charles is dealing with the departure of a protege whom he treated like a daughter, having his actual daughter come back to Chicago would set up a natural contrast. Plus, the abrupt way Robin left means there are plenty of questions that her return could answer.
It seems like Reese isn’t coming back (producers have said the door is open but there’s no news yet on Rachel DiPillo reprising her role), so Chicago Med has to think about where it wants to take Charles long-term as well. It’s on the right track; it often felt forced when the show would have to come up with a new psych patient every week, so why not just use him when there’s an organic way to work him into a story rather than creating a story to get him in?
There’s certainly enough ways to do it. As Oliver Platt has been great at demonstrating over the last three seasons, there’s a lot more Charles is good for than just telling whether or not a patient is crazy. He can provide alternative options, be a sounding board for patients and doctors alike, and generally calm everyone down.
And what was with that semi-rivalry he had with Sam Abrams (Brennan Brown) in a recent episode? Was that a one-off thing or do the two have some kind of actual issue with each other? If it’s the latter, let’s explore that. It’d be great to see two doctors who genuinely don’t get along and how they’ve learned to coexist.
