Dick Wolf, the producer behind the One Chicago and Law & Order franchises, has his birthday today so we’re celebrating all he’s brought to television.

Today is the birthday of one of TV’s biggest producers. Without Dick Wolf, two of TV’s most well-known franchises wouldn’t exist—along with quite a few other shows besides.

He’s the architect of the One Chicago franchise. It’s his company behind Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, and Chicago Med. Those three shows are enjoying their best year yet, with ratings growth that’s enabled NBC to take over Wednesday nights.

Think about that for a second: one franchise is winning an entire night for NBC. And that’s before we even start talking about the syndication deals that were made for Chicago PD in the offseason, bringing that show to cable on an almost daily basis.

This trifecta is one of the biggest brands on TV, and it’s Dick Wolf’s engine that’s driving it.

He’s also the man who made history with the Law & Order franchise. There’s been a whole line of Law & Order shows, with Special Victims Unit celebrating two decades in business this year.

And it’s not over yet; he’ll have an SVU spinoff on the air in 2019.

Dick Wolf was building TV franchises before some of his fans were even born. And if that’s not impressive enough, you might not realize that he’s also behind a lot of other series all across the small screen.

Wolf is behind FBI, which is CBS‘s biggest new series this season. He’s bringing back New York Undercover for a second life after it originally ran on FOX.

And through his Wolf Reality banner, he’s produced shows like Cold Justice, Nightwatch, Criminal Confessions, and Nightwatch Nation. It’s amazing how much he’s been able to accomplish in his career—more than most people would have been able to do in a half-dozen careers! From reality TV to scripted drama, from original shows to spinoffs, he’s a versatile producer who never slows down.

Dick Wolf is one of a kind, and someone who has left his mark not only on TV right now, but in the TV history books. Television is better off for him having been a part of it.
