Chicago Med season 4 midseason report: Ethan Choi
What’s next
When Chicago Med returns, it will have to decide how much of Choi’s personal life it will keep in the spotlight. Emily seems to be well and truly gone, but will we see Choi and Vicki actually back together on screen? We’ve only seen him leave the hospital with her—they have yet to be shown dating again.
And if they are, how long until April says something about it? The show has been pretty heavy-handed in showing how April is not over him and thus jealous of Vicki, whether it’s asking why she’s there or popping up in the background looking on while she’s around. It’s obvious where this is going, so somewhere in the back 13 there’s probably going to be a moment where April tells Choi she’s not over him.
But all of that is secondary to the fact that Ethan Choi is one of the hospital’s best doctors and he is particularly good in tough medical storylines. He takes the complicated and has a way of making it simple (remember when he came up with the new mass casualty protocol during last season’s mass shooting?). The show shouldn’t forget that part of him, either.
With Will Halstead in witness protection, it’s safe to assume Choi will have had to assume some of his workload. There’s not anyone else who can do that as easily; Connor is focused on working in his hybrid OR, Natalie’s in pediatrics and Ava is upstairs. That’s going to be a heavy workload but if anyone can handle it, it’s Ethan Choi.
That will be a worthwhile angle to explore, if the series is willing to keep things upended for a bit in January. It’s time to find Choi another great medical problem—does anyone have another panda?
