What’s happened so far
After almost losing her job last season, Maggie has gone to the opposite end of the spectrum in Chicago Med season 4: she’s gotten a new job. Somewhat.
Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) offered Maggie a position as the nurse on his new surgical team, and so audiences have gotten to see her in action on a few different procedures in the first nine episodes.
When she’s not in the hybrid OR, she continues to serve as the ED’s charge nurse. And her personal life, which was a talking point last season, appears to be in the background again this season.

What it means
The idea of having Maggie move into the operating room has been interesting and a great way to see her practice hands-on medicine, as opposed to just directing traffic in the ED. But it feels like there’s more to be explored in her new job description.
Only one episode dealt with April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) having to take over Maggie’s duties as the charge nurse, and the subplot was resolved by the end of the episode. It feels like there should be more growing pains than that for both of them. And since Maggie still handles charge work when there isn’t a surgery, there’s not that much difference between this season and what she’s been doing in past seasons.
It’s great that she gets a break now and then to do something different, and something that she’s really good at. But it’s pretty telling that none of the highlight videos NBC has posted for the first nine episodes feature Maggie.
What’s next
Maggie will obviously continue to serve as Connor’s right-hand woman on surgical procedures in the hybrid OR, which is great. More of that will always be welcome, because it’s always important to show the full range of what the show’s characters are capable of.
But Chicago Med has to decide what it wants to do with her long-term. Is she going to become a surgical nurse and that opens the door for April (who could also use a shakeup in story) to be the new charge nurse? If Maggie continues simply to move between the two, she’s not really moving up that much, and neither is April.
Plus, what happened to Maggie’s personal life? She seemed like she was rekindling things with her ex last season before it came out that he’d changed his name—and then the show dropped the whole subject. It’s understandable if that specific story with Maggie and Barry is over, but that doesn’t mean Maggie shouldn’t have a storyline of her own somewhere.
She’s spent most of the season so far in service of other people’s stories or being the support for their problems, so we’re once again waiting to see when Chicago Med will give Maggie her episode to shine.
