Chicago Med star Oliver Platt is celebrating his birthday Saturday, so we’re celebrating him and his character, Dr. Daniel Charles.

Today we’re saying happy birthday to Oliver Platt, who stars on Chicago Med as our favorite Zen master of psychiatry, Dr. Daniel Charles.

We’ve said it before on this site, but Oliver Platt is a national treasure. He’s a familiar face to fans of Dick Wolf shows, fans of NBC, and TV fans in general. He’s one of those actors who’s been all over the small screen.

Before he began starring on Chicago Med, you probably recognized him from roles on series like The West Wing, Huff, Deadline and The Big C. He also portrayed New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner in the ESPN miniseries The Bronx is Burning.

But One Chicago fans know him as the amiable, dependable and almost maddeningly calm Daniel Charles.

Dr. Charles continues to be as reliable as ever, even though his personal life took a massive turn this year between the end of the third season and the first part of season 4.

He’s spent most of his recent time investigating Robert Haywood (recurring guest star Michel Gill), a professor who also happened to be a dangerous predator.

What made matters worse was that Haywood is the estranged father of Dr. Sarah Reese (former series star Rachel DiPillo), and Reese was so upset at Charles for his handling of the situation that his former protege quit.

For someone who had his surrogate daughter walk out on him, though, Dr. Charles has bounced back pretty well. Aside from the season premiere Chicago Med season 4 hasn’t shown him to be in that much distress.

In fact, he’s trying to fix other people’s problems—he just tried to get through to medical student Elsa Currie (guest star Molly Bernard), as you can watch by playing the video at the bottom of this article.

This season has basically been business as usual for Dr. Charles, which means more great work from Oliver Platt. Like his character, he can handle anything that’s handed to him, and there’s that charismatic quality about him that puts the audience at ease (which is a great quality to have if you’re playing a doctor who has to deal with upset and/or unstable people).

He’s a pleasure to watch each week, and it will be interesting to see if Chicago Med continues to change up his role and has Charles interacting with more of the hospital staff, now that he’s not tied to a resident. It’s been fantastic to see Platt playing off a wider pool of actors, and there’s so much more that he can do now that the character’s storyline has opened up.

Happy birthday, Oliver Platt! Here’s hoping it’s a fantastic day for a fantastic actor.
