What should One Chicago fans learn from this week’s Chicago PD? Look closer at last night’s episode with our Chicago PD season 6, episode 11 takeaways.

What did One Chicago fans learn from this week’s Chicago PD episode? Here’s what we took away from the latest installment, “Trust.”

“Trust” featured the murder of a defense attorney who was a friend of Hank Voight (Jason Beghe), which made it even worse when Voight discovered the identities of the people responsible for the crime. Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) also returned to Intelligence for the first time since the accident with the drug dealer.

If you missed any of this week’s episode or just want a refresher on the events that we’re about to discuss, you can catch up with our Chicago PD recap.

Below are our takeaways from this week’s episode:

More from One Chicago Center

1) Dirty politics

This was one of the easier Chicago PD cases of the week to figure out. Was anyone surprised when it was revealed that Superintendent Kelton (John C. McGinley) and Deputy Superintendent Brennan (Anne Heche) were both involved in the murder?

Part of it was the casting—if you’re at all familiar with the work of John C. McGinley, you know that he’s fabulous at playing smug, kind of squirmy authority figures. He was one of “The Bobs” in Office Space and also starred as Dr. Cox in Scrubs, to name but two of them.

When he was revealed as Kelton, it was natural to think Kelton was up to something. That’s the type that he plays. And by extension, since Brennan’s whole modus operandi since she was introduced was about making Kelton the next mayor, it was then easy to realize she was also going to be dirty. This plot was full of drama, but it wasn’t that much different from previous political-themed episodes of this show—or any other show.

2) Atwater’s bad luck

Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) was shot in this episode, as you can watch by playing the video clip below. What is it with Chicago PD and having terrible things happen to Atwater?

In fairness, he’s not the only one; Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) was also shot this season during the One Chicago crossover. And Jay’s partner Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) was almost shot in a different episode.

But you have to cringe when something like this happens to Atwater, because he seems to always get injured, or heartbroken, or something else. He lost his family last season, lost a love interest in this season, got kidnapped last season, and has now been shot.

It’s really not been a good run for him. What is it about him that he keeps being the show’s most frequent target? And what will it take for the writers to cut him a break?

3) Everyone knows everybody

This episode saw a friend of Voight’s being murdered. Longtime Chicago PD fans know that Hank Voight has a lot of friends. So, too, does Trudy Platt (Amy Morton); she just happened to know the people who were investigating both Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger).

Part of this is to be expected—Trudy and Voight are lifetime police officers, so obviously they’ll have met a lot of people over their decades on the force. But more recently, it feels like the show is using that as more of a plot device. It was awfully convenient that there were separate inquiries into both Burgess and Ruzek, yet Trudy knew both the investigating officers.

And Voight’s friends have found their ways into lots of cases; there’s this and then remember that he was friends with the Congressman being investigated in last season’s “Politics” as well. They’re connected people, for sure, but Chicago PD is starting to pull that card once too often.
