What should fans watch for in this week’s Chicago PD? Get ready for tonight’s episode with our Chicago PD season 6, episode 13 preview.

Fans of Chicago PD will be excited because the next episode focuses on a beloved character, but that’s not the only reason not to miss it.

“Night in Chicago” is centered on Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins), who hasn’t had nearly enough screen time over the past two seasons. And when he does, the episodes usually involve some kind of bad thing happening to him.

So will this episode break that unlucky streak? Well, it’s pretty hard to figure out.

The official description from NBC says that Atwater goes undercover, and that did not work out well for him just four episodes ago in “Black and Blue,” where he saw a love interest hauled off in handcuffs and tossed a murder weapon into the river.

That brings up the second interesting point about this plot: someone is going undercover again. It’s something that comes up on TV crime dramas now and then, but Chicago PD has done that a few times, and multiple times this season.

Atwater was undercover in “Black and Blue.” Ruzek did it in “Fathers and Sons.” Atwater was also inside of a mosque in “Trigger.” We’re only 13 episodes into the season, so the show has used this as the main plot or a significant part of the plot roughly once every four episodes.

So how many times is too many times? Or will this episode make itself distinct enough from the previous examples that audiences won’t care? We’ll have to watch and see.

The other part of this Chicago PD episode worth getting excited about is the one you’ll see in the video above. Wendell Pierce returns as Alderman Ray Price, and that’s a huge plus for this season. Anyone who remembers him from last season (or has seen him on Jack Ryan, Suits or The Wire) knows what a tremendous actor Pierce is.

He fits in particularly well opposite Jason Beghe on this show, and he should be a counter to the smarminess of John C. McGinley as Superintendent Kelton (if the two get to interact). The idea of Voight enlisting Price to help him topple Kelton and Deputy Superintendent Brennan is worth getting excited about; that would inject some much-appreciated fresh energy into the ongoing political subplot.

The only way to see if that’s where Chicago PD is actually going is to watch this episode, so get your popcorn and let’s hope for a good week for Atwater and a bad week for the bad guys.
