Charles…and Robin?

Robin Charles (Mekia Cox) returned to Chicago Med this week, along with her mother! Dr. Charles’ ex-wife Caroline (portrayed by Paula Newsome of NCIS and Barry) was struggling with cancer and had hopes for a clinical trial taking place at the hospital.

Connor inevitably ran into everybody, which led to an awkward hug between him and ex-girlfriend Robin. She apologized for not staying in touch after she abruptly disappeared last season and they agreed to catch up, while there was an even more awkward moment where Caroline thanked him for being there for Robin when she needed him most.

Caroline’s difficult diagnosis led Charles to look back on his relationship, specifically how it broke apart his family, because neither his parents nor hers approved of their marriage. He hadn’t talked to his mother since, but the events of the day motivated him to visit her in her nursing home at the end of the episode.

Of course, Robin met Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling), Connor’s next ex-girlfriend. That obviously didn’t come up in conversation, but luckily that awkward scene was brief.

While dealing with his own family, Charles worked his calming magic on an eight-year-old whose father was injured shoving him out of the way of the truck. Unfortunately, Andre’s father passed away in surgery, so Charles had to explain to him that his dad was never coming back. The story had a bittersweet ending, as Andre had recovered his father’s police badge and vowed to be brave just like his dad, while several officers were there to comfort him and his aunt.
