The next Chicago Med is bringing back a number of characters, so how will their returns affect the hospital’s already rocky dynamic? And is there any end in sight to the existing drama?

Wednesday’s episode is entitled “Old Flames, New Sparks,” which prompts One Chicago fans to ask if any relationships are going to be rekindled here. And the truth is that may not be the worst idea in the world!

The existing relationships around the hospital are an absolute mess, and they’ve been that way for a while; in fact, the synopsis for this episode feels like more of the same. Will’s got a problem; Ava and Connor still can’t get along.

Audiences have heard that for weeks now and there’s only so long any TV show can hit the same notes before the audience gets bored. Remember last season, when the show dragged out Robert Haywood’s storyline for far too long?

So here we are, with Chicago Med bringing back some old characters. On other TV shows, this might feel cliche, but because these characters didn’t get a great sendoff when they left, there’s more chance for growth here. There’s an opportunity to do things differently.

Vicki Glass (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) appears in the episode, and while she’s still dating Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee), we haven’t really seen that relationship fleshed out on screen. Vicki pops up briefly or to be used for dramatic tension between Choi and his ex April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta).

Robin Charles (Mekia Cox) is here, too, and having her disappear left her storyline fairly open-ended especially since before that, she was mostly turned into a headache for Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) as it was already clear that Chicago Med wasn’t going to keep them together anymore.

Her story deserves a chance to wrap up organically, in something that feels right for her and for her relationship with Connor. And honestly, if they were to reconnect, it wouldn’t be terrible. Even if you ship Connor and Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling), every Chicago Med fan can agree that all that’s happening between them right now is arguing.

Let Connor go out, have a nice dinner with an old friend, and relax—and there’s nothing that says he and Robin have to be more than friends. And can Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) have a story that’s not somehow related to his issues since returning to Chicago?

There’s a lot of room for improvement around Chicago Med, and if it takes going back to the past and fixing some old issues, then that could actually be a huge gain and a way to move forward.
