The Village premiere brought Chicago Fire alum Warren Christie back to NBC, but ratings for the drama were just average in its first episode.

Former Chicago Fire actor Warren Christie’s new series premiered Tuesday, but The Village didn’t immediately catch fire with TV viewers.

The highly promoted drama, which saw Christie return to NBC for the first time since portraying Scott Rice in Chicago Fire season 3, had 4.91 million people watching its first episode live.

That made it the fifth most-watched show on broadcast TV and third amongst adults 18-49 with a 0.9 share.

There’s good and bad in that, the most obvious being that it’s probably not the big debut that NBC was hoping for after spending so much airtime promoting The Village and scheduling it in a prime time slot behind This Is Us.

Especially with CBS airing nothing but repeats this Tuesday, it would’ve been nice to see The Village get higher ratings when it was debuting on what was a pretty slow broadcast TV night.

But when you compare numbers between the series premiere and its direct competition, there’s cause for optimism.

The Village won the Tuesday 10 p.m. time slot, just more than a repeat NCIS: Los Angeles (4.66 million) and more than The Rookie on ABC (4.19 million).

It also stacks up decently against other NBC shows, too. New Amsterdam had a significantly bigger live audience last Tuesday at the same time (6.11 million, or 1.2 million more).

But The Village pulled in more people than the most recent new episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (4.31 million). And it scored around the same as last Wednesday’s all-repeat lineup of One Chicago shows (the highest being Chicago Med at 4.74).

Obviously there’s room for improvement, but The Village did attract a decent audience for its first week. Compared to other NBC shows, it’s right in the middle, which isn’t bad for a series that has no established audience.

The question is how the show will fare next Tuesday when CBS begins airing originals and other networks may stiffen up their competition as well. That could push the series’ ratings down into danger territory, or maybe people will come back for more and the show can find a loyal viewer base. Even if it’s not a ratings winner, if it can deliver a consistent audience, that might be enough for NBC to consider it worth keeping around.

Chicago Fire fans can still watch The Village premiere on demand, on Hulu, or for a limited time it’s free to download on iTunes.
