Chicago Med will have a new producing director next season, as frequent Dick Wolf collaborator Michael Pressman joins the team for Chicago Med season 5.

The next Chicago Med season just added a major piece behind the scenes. Michael Pressman has been hired as producing director for Chicago Med season 5, meaning that he will be both director and an executive producer.

Under that arrangement, Pressman should be directing multiple episodes next season. That, in turn, means he’ll have a significant voice in how the show looks and feels—because he’ll be the one behind the camera for a decent part of it.

The New York native isn’t new to the One Chicago franchise; he’s directed three previous Med episodes: this season’s “Ghosts in the Attic”, last season’s “Devil in Disguise” and then “Lessons Learned” in season 2.

He’s also developed a long-running relationship with Dick Wolf that goes back 15 years.

Pressman joined the Dick Wolf universe in 2004 when he directed an episode of the original Law & Order.

Since then, he’s worked on seven more episodes of that series, one episode of Law & Order: Trial By Jury, two installments of Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders and more than a dozen chapters of Law & Order: SVU.

Most recently, he was responsible for “Brothel,” the SVU season 20 episode that aired on Valentine’s Day.

Deadline originally reported his new position.

Though Pressman has limited experience within the One Chicago franchise, he obviously knows what it takes to work within the Dick Wolf world—and he’s already familiar with Chicago Med. He’s just expanding his role on the series, which should be an interesting development when you consider some of the other things he’s gotten to do.

Well before starting here, Pressman worked on multiple episodes of Chicago Hope, so that means he has the unique perspective of being involved with two Chicago-set medical dramas. And that’d possibly be useful, since tonally, the two shows are kind of similar.

Plus, he gets brownie points because he directed one of the best films of the early 1990’s: the hit sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze. That was the definitive film for the Ninja Turtles franchise, and so you have to automatically respect the man who helped create such a definitive pop culture experience.

While there won’t be any superheroes coming to Chicago Med next season, Michael Pressman has the potential to add a lot to the series. That’s just one more reason to look forward to next season, which if you can believe it should be only about five and a half months away!
