The Code premiere scored in the TV ratings, which was great news for the new series starring Chicago Med alum Ato Essandoh.

More than eight million people tuned in Tuesday to watch The Code, CBS‘s new series featuring Chicago Med actor Ato Essandoh.

8.17 million audience members tuned in live to the premiere of the military drama, which features Essandoh as Major Trey Ferry, a veteran Judge Advocate General (JAG) prosecutor working as part of an elite team at Quantico.

For comparison, that was less than a million viewers behind Dick Wolf‘s drama FBI, which usually has the Tuesday 9 p.m. time slot. The previous week’s FBI had 9.06 million live viewers.

The Code was the second most-watched show on broadcast TV this week, behind only its lead-in NCIS. It also tied for third in the coveted adults 18-49 sample, which was better than FBI.

Even more interesting is that The Code premiere was watched by more people than any of the latest One Chicago episodes. It had 320,000 more live viewers than the Apr. 3 episode of Chicago Med, where Ato Essandoh has recurred as Dr. Isidore Latham since the second season.

It had a whopping 1.2 million more eyeballs watching than saw the last Chicago PD (6.91) and eked out a small edge over the latest Chicago Fire (8.10).

In what wound up being a head-to-head-to-head battle of three shows featuring One Chicago performers all competing against each other, The Code crushed Chicago Fire alum Warren Christie and his freshman drama The Village, which continued to settle with 4.18 million viewers.

It also beat Chicago Justice star Monica Barbaro‘s guest appearance in the Splitting Up Together season finale, which had just 2.49 million people watching on ABC.

Of course, premiere numbers are always higher—people tune in at first to try out a new show and see if they’re going to like it. The real test will come next Tuesday, but so far Ato Essandoh is doing very well in his new job, and getting more screen time, too. If The Code continues to do well and is renewed, that may mean seeing even less of Dr. Latham in the future.

If you weren’t one of those people watching live, CBS will re-air The Code this Saturday night at 9 p.m. You can also learn more about the series by playing the video below for a behind the scenes look.
