Dick Wolf producing First Responders Live reality series for FOX
Dick Wolf has yet another new series, and this one is live. First Responders Live will bring real-life crime and rescue drama to FOX in June.
The Dick Wolf universe is growing again, and this time he’s moving into live television. Wolf’s new reality series First Responders Live will premiere June 12 on FOX, and One Chicago fans ought to be both interested and possibly concerned.
The one-hour, ongoing series will have cameras following units around the country, including police, firefighters, and paramedics. Former ESPN and ABC personality Josh Elliott will serve as the host in-studio, with commentary on the action provided by a panel that hasn’t been announced yet.
If you think that sounds like a live version of the One Chicago franchise, you’re not alone—that’s exactly what Wolf called it in Friday’s press release.
“First Responders Live will give viewers a front row seat to paramedic, fire and police calls, and they will see the challenges of every type of emergency,” he said. “It is truly the real-life version of Chicago Fire, Chicago PD and Chicago Med.”

It will likely draw comparisons to A&E’s hit series Live PD, which utilizes a similar format of having a host and analysts in studio while going between camera crews in the field.
A&E is already expanding Live PD into a franchise with spinoff Live Rescue premiering on April 22. The network also previously worked with Dick Wolf on a similar show called Nightwatch (later rebranded as Nightwatch Nation), which also followed police, fire and paramedics on their shifts.
But Nightwatch wasn’t live—this new show is.

What’s more interesting, and possibly troubling, for One Chicago viewers is the series’ time slot. First Responders Live will air Wednesdays at 9 p.m., so folks going through One Chicago franchise withdrawal can tune in and get a semi-similar fix.
However, it remains to be seen how many episodes the first season will have. Live PD has grown to two nights a week and airs through the fall because of its popularity; if First Responders Live is similarly successful and FOX has the room on its primetime schedule, there’s the possibility that it would be direct competition for Chicago Fire. That’s a slim chance, but it does exist.
This will be the fifth new project for Wolf this year, as he continues to diversify his portfolio to expand to other networks after a long run working primarily on NBC.
He has FBI spinoff FBI: Most Wanted in development at CBS, Law & Order: Hate Crimes in the works for NBC, a New York Undercover revival ramping up at ABC, and just premiered another reality series Murder For Hire on NBC’s sister channel Oxygen.
