This week’s Chicago Fire goes down one of the show’s more familiar roads, but it could still be an incredibly rewarding ride for One Chicago fans as we approach the end of season 7.

Wednesday’s episode “Try Like Hell” involves Firehouse 51 looking into a suspicious fire, which is something that happens a lot. Our firefighters spend almost as much time investigating as they do putting out fires—even though there’s an actual Office of Fire Investigation.

But that’s something the show has to do, to an extent, because not taking that dramatic license would shorten plots. Things would move a lot quicker if the crew were just putting out fires and nothing else.

So the challenge for Chicago Fire is how to make these more “whodunit” and “howdunit” stories constantly interesting, and standing apart from one another. After almost seven seasons, that’s not easy!

In the case of this episode, the hook comes from putting together two characters who we don’t see together very often: Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker).

Severide normally is doing his investigating with Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) or Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), and any time Boden gets out of his office, it’s always welcome.

So how will they work together in this kind of a plotline? And what are they going to find? They’ll have to find something, or again, it’d be a pretty short episode.

The other part of “Try Like Hell” seems to be another of Chicago Fire‘s comedic subplots where half of the team is looking for something, in this case a missing engine part. Those storylines, too, are pretty familiar and they can be hit or miss. (See: the search for Benny Severide’s missing medal vs. the search for Boden’s calendar.)

But the real appeal of Wednesday’s installment is going to be seeing more Boden, and seeing him work with Severide in a different capacity. This could be a really interesting team-up because it’s a different type of storyline than we normally watch them in, and Severide could even teach the chief something with how many times he’s been through plots like this.
