This week’s Chicago PD is venturing into familiar territory, while also bringing One Chicago fans’ attention back to the show’s new primary ship. Could this be indicative of where the show will be headed next season?
Wednesday’s episode “Sacrifice” involves a heist crew stealing drugs, and drugs are one of the two common themes on this show. A good 75 percent of cases of the week involve either drugs, gangs or both.
One difference here is that the bad guys are moving prescription drugs, instead of illegal narcotics, but it’s hard to see how much that’s going to change the actual storyline. It could be a big change or business as usual for Intelligence.
What will likely be of more interest to viewers is the personal subplot.

Chicago PD will be focusing on the romance between Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) and Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), as the case will throw some kind of a wrench in their relationship.
The series pushed the Ruzek and Upton ship fairly hard in the first half of the season, after hooking them up off-screen between episodes 2 and 3 this fall.

But there hasn’t been as much of it recently, as the show shifted focus to trying to develop the relationship between Ruzek’s ex Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Blair Williams (recurring guest star Charles Michael Davis).
With Blair no longer in the picture, the series is now going back to Ruzek and Upton to fill the relationship part that’s a significant portion of every One Chicago show.
What’s going to complicate their lives? Could we get a glimpse of where these two are seriously headed in the future, or maybe not? The writers want fans invested in this relationship, but fans are not all on board yet. “Sacrifice” could be a big step toward showing if these two are seriously committed, and how committed Chicago PD is to the idea of Upton and Ruzek.
