FBI spinoff FBI: Most Wanted has been officially picked up for a first season this fall, giving Dick Wolf a new franchise on CBS.

FBI is now officially a franchise, as CBS has ordered the spinoff FBI: Most Wanted to series.

The move gives Dick Wolf three franchises on the air, and his first that won’t be on NBC. He has the Law & Order and One Chicago franchises on NBC, both of which were renewed recently and will continue through at least 2020.

When it premiered last fall, FBI quickly became one of the most popular freshman series and has delivered solid ratings throughout its season. With 8-9 million people watching live most weeks, it has often brought in more viewers than either the One Chicago shows or Law & Order: SVU.

With those numbers it was no surprise that a spinoff was in development quickly.

The original series premiered in September, and Most Wanted was in the works by January. It then aired as a backdoor pilot on April 2. That episode, also called “Most Wanted,” was watched live by over 9 million people.

It was the second most-watched show on broadcast TV that night, as well, making a series order feel like a “when” rather than “if.”

Now it’s official, and CBS viewers will be able to follow the Fugitives Department on their own cases next season, though it wouldn’t be surprising if there are also crossovers—given how successful that idea has been for the One Chicago programs.

FBI: Most Wanted is headlined by Alana de la Garza (Law & Order, Law & Order: Los Angeles) and Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck). The regular cast of the FBI spinoff also includes Kellan Lutz (Twilight), Keisha Castle-Hughes (Whale Rider), Nathaniel Arcand and Roxy Sternberg.

CBS has not announced a premiere date for the new series, but it’s a safe bet it will be in mid to late September, when most networks launch their fall programs. Stay tuned for further updates on the show and the new franchise!
