The Code, starring Chicago Med’s Ato Essandoh, pulled by CBS

THE CODE will have a special premiere on Tuesday, April 9 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) before it moves into its regular Monday time period on April 15 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT), after MAGNUM P.I. completes its season order. THE CODE is a drama about the military's brightest minds who take on our country's toughest legal challenges, inside the courtroom and out, in the only law office in the world where every attorney is trained as a prosecutor, a defense lawyer, an investigator - and a Marine. The Code, starring Chicago Med alum Ato Essandoh, has been pulled off the air by CBS while no decision has been made about its future.

One Chicago fans who have been enjoying Ato Essandoh‘s new series The Code are in for a huge shock: CBS has pulled the show from its schedule effective immediately.

The network replaced last night’s planned episode with a rerun of Magnum, P.I. and the episodes planned for June 17, June 24 and July 1 are gone off the calendar as well.

What makes this more surprising is that CBS hasn’t officially said anything about the show being cancelled, or renewed for that matter. The series is still considered “on the bubble,” one of the last broadcast TV shows in limbo.

CBS announced their primetime schedule in May, but didn’t make a decision about The Code and seemed like they were going to let the show run out its first season before choosing whether or not to order a second.

Obviously, that plan has changed—and without any information about when fans will get to see the four episodes that are left.

The Code focuses on an elite group of military lawyers who investigate and try cases out of the Judge Advocate General headquarters. Essandoh, who recurs on Chicago Med as Dr. Isidore Latham, stars as veteran team member Major Trey Ferry.

While the show started strong in its sneak preview after NCIS, the ratings have tapered downward since then, but are still solid.

The last episode had 4.61 million live viewers, making it the fourth most-seen show on broadcast TV that night—and that was against the Stanley Cup Finals on NBC. So if you take out the live sports, it was within the top three of programs.

Does this sudden schedule change mean The Code is cancelled? Not necessarily. As mentioned above, CBS hasn’t said anything officially.

And last month NBC did a similar thing to its thriller Blindspot, deciding to take the show off the air during the coveted May sweeps period, but then renewed the series for a fifth season anyway.

So if you’re a Chicago Med fan supporting Ato Essandoh’s new show, your best bet is to wait for the new episodes to return and then be sure to watch them live. Live ratings will make the most impact on CBS as they choose what to do with the series. Hopefully it will be renewed and keep one of our One Chicago stars on the air.
