Ava Bekker

Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) has the distinction of being the first main character that Chicago Med added during its run. She was first introduced in the season 2 finale, then promoted into the main cast beginning with season 3.

Ava arrived at the hospital as a new cardiothoracic surgeon determined to beat out Connor Rhodes for the top spot in the department—while almost immediately flirting with him, too, even though he was in a relationship with Robin Charles when they met. Robin was quickly written out after a few episodes in season 3, though, and Ava and Connor were soon hooking up.

Their relationship—and her character—took a sharp turn this season. Ava was first seen flirting with Connor’s father Cornelius Rhodes (recurring guest star D.W. Moffett) to get funding for a new hybrid OR that would keep his son in Chicago. She then began to do other strange things, like find ways to undermine Connor, intentionally injure herself during a surgery, and make Connor think that Robin had been kidnapped!

Or so we think, because Ava’s storyline was left somewhat open-ended. In the season finale, she confessed to murdering Cornelius because she thought that with him gone, she and Connor would get back together. Needless to say, he didn’t share that belief and Ava stormed out of the hospital after calling him an “ungrateful prick.”

Off-screen, Ava was dropped from Chicago Med as a “creative decision” by the writers, who chose to drop her character at the end of the season. Not that she would have lasted much longer at the hospital anyway, given that at a minimum she murdered someone.
