Which Chicago Med characters stood out the most during the most recent season? Count down the best characters from Chicago Med season 4.

Now that Chicago Med season 4 has come to an end, it’s time to begin our yearly look back at the season that was, starting with a big question: who were the best characters this season?

The fourth season was the show’s most chaotic, from crazy professional developments taking place at the hospital (like a car crashing into the ambulance bay) to increasingly dramatic things in people’s personal lives (someone turned out to be a murderer!). With all that going on, it was hard to figure out which characters were the most prominent.

We’ve narrowed it down to three characters who stand out for a number of reasons—because they did something particularly impressive, because the writers finally figured them out, because the actors stole the show or some combination of the above. These are the ones who stood out from the rest over those 22 episodes.

3. Connor Rhodes

Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) was underutilized for a majority of the season. Most of what the writers gave him revolved around his relationship with Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling), and that spun out of control—and over the top—quickly. But it’s a testament to how much Colin Donnell brings to Chicago Med, that Connor was still such a watchable character even when he didn’t have nearly enough to do.

One of the season’s more interesting medical stories was Connor coming up with the idea for a hybrid operating room, and then watching that concept become a reality. It was fun to see him change his job title for the third time, and impressive to watch him stretch his talents in another direction. Connor being in charge of the hybrid OR allowed fans to see him in a leadership role and proved there’s very little he can’t do.

Even when the show piled drama on top of him, Colin Donnell always turned in a reliable performance, no matter how many odd twists the plot took. Particularly near the end of the season, he showed us Connor’s vulnerability and self-doubt, and appeared to be reaching another crossroads in his life. It’s too bad that we won’t get to see what choices he made since Colin was dropped from the show.
