2. Will Halstead

Chicago Med ran Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) through the wringer this season, and fans have to give him props for just surviving it—and kudos to Nick for doing some incredibly heavy lifting in all of this.

The writers gave Will a storyline almost better suited to Chicago PD, having him work undercover to bust a local gangster—then being sent off into witness protection, destroying his engagement, and ending the season with someone attempting to kill him and injuring his ex-fiancee instead. It’s been one heck of a season for him, for better and for worse.

One could argue the storyline dragged on far too long, as it wound up dominating Will’s season. But you can’t say that he didn’t do everything he could, whether it was trying to do the right thing or just trying to keep from being shot to death. He was thrown into an unpredictable situation, pressured into it even, and he took the challenge head on. Will started this season engaged and trying to build his future, and he ended it with very little to look forward to.

And with all the high drama surrounding his character, Nick Gehlfuss gave some of his best performances as a guy who was just doing the best he could, and yet wound up constantly getting the short end of the stick because of it. His character was completely broken down, and Nick’s performance was so good that the audience hung in there with him even as the plot kept getting harder and harder on Will.
