Colin Donnell is fan favorite to return in Arrow season 8

Colin Donnell may have been cut from Chicago Med, but fans are already campaigning for him to reprise his role as Tommy Merlyn on Arrow.

While Chicago Med broke up with Colin Donnell, another show’s fan base is more than happy to have him. Arrow fans are already clamoring for the actor to return in the upcoming final season.

Before he played Dr. Connor Rhodes on Chicago Med, Donnell’s first series regular role was on The CW‘s superhero series Arrow. He portrayed Tommy Merlyn, the wisecracking best friend of Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), before being killed off at the end of the first season.

But even though Tommy died, the actor’s appeared on the show multiple times since, including but not limited to a few flashbacks, as an evil Nazi version from an alternate reality, and when Oliver was on trial and Christopher Chance was pretending to be Tommy Merlyn.

Most recently, he appeared in the penultimate episode of this season, which aired on May 6. In “Living Proof,” a trapped Oliver had a tough conversation with his old friend. If you missed it, here are a few clips:

Given his lengthy history with Arrow, it’s entirely possible that Donnell could make at least one more appearance to help send off the show that gave him his big TV break, and based on a recent poll, that’s exactly what viewers want.

TVLine asked fans which characters they’d like to see return during Arrow season 8, and Tommy Merlyn was the number one write-in vote. He received a jaw-dropping 31 percent of the category, which means more than a third of the time, people were writing in votes for him.

He’s certainly available to guest star, given that Chicago Med producers decided to drop Connor from the series at the end of season 4. The decision hasn’t gone over well with One Chicago fans, who are still lamenting the loss of one of their favorite characters.

The situation was complicated more by the fact that Connor didn’t get an actual exit—he was last seen reacting to the reveal that Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) had murdered his father, in hopes of getting back together.

But the writers’ decision put an incredibly talented actor back on the market, and it’s hard not to see him appearing in at least one TV show this coming season. At least, if viewers have their way, he’ll be once again stepping back into Tommy Merlyn’s shoes somehow this fall.

Arrow season 8 premieres Tuesday, October 15 at 9 p.m. on The CW. We’ll have to wait and see if Colin Donnell appears in one, or more, of the final 10 episodes.
