In this article, we’re profiling Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins).

What happened

The latest season was more of the same for Atwater. While he spent most of his time acting as a supporting character for other people, he had a handful of big moments, usually related to the fact that he’s both a cop and a person of color.

Atwater made a love connection in “Black and Blue” when he met Laila (played by Milauna Jemai Jackson), a community organizer with a dark past. Unfortunately, while Laila liked him, that past also came back to haunt her and she was arrested at the end of the episode, never to be seen or mentioned again.

Another undercover operation went wrong during “Night in Chicago” when Atwater and the guy he was riding with were pulled over by racist police officers. The other man was shot to death, which infuriated Atwater. Though the videotape appeared to tell one story, Kevin didn’t waste any time in finding the officer who’d pulled the trigger and making his feelings very clear.

Those were his only two featured episodes, but he made an impact when he had the chance to.
