FBI has found its replacement for Sela Ward. Alana de la Garza will take over in FBI season 2 instead of starring in the FBI: Most Wanted spinoff.

Another Dick Wolf franchise is trading talent. FBI has decided who will replace Sela Ward, and it’s someone from the spinoff FBI: Most Wanted.

Ward starred as Dana Mosier, the Special Agent in Charge of the squad, in the first season of FBI. But the actress had only committed to one season of the series, and so Mosier resigned from the Bureau at the end of the season finale in May.

Taking over the leadership role in FBI season 2 will be Isobel Castile, the character played by Alana de la Garza in the episode “Most Wanted.”

That episode was a backdoor pilot for FBI: Most Wanted, but instead of starring in the spinoff, de la Garza will now move her character to the original series. The plan is for her to be a series regular there, while recurring on the spinoff as necessary.

The change in plans reunites the actress with Jeremy Sisto, with whom she co-starred in the final three seasons of Law & Order. He played Detective Cyrus Lupo, who worked closely with her ADA Connie Rubirosa.

It’s not the first time Dick Wolf has moved actors around to bolster a series. He previously had Jon Seda move his Chicago PD character to spinoff Chicago Justice, in hopes of bringing more viewers to the new series.

That didn’t work out, and Seda returned to Chicago PD for two more seasons before he was dropped from the show at the end of this season.

Aside from the precedent, there are some logistical reasons why the FBI move will be of interest to fans. It ostensibly means there will be a shift in the spinoff’s narrative. With Castile no longer a regular character, will Jess Lacroix (Julian MthcMahon) be made the new squad supervisor?

Or will Castile oversee both teams? If it’s the latter, then obviously the focus on Most Wanted will be more on LaCroix and his squad’s field work, because they won’t have Castile around as much to delve into administrative or political angles.

Plus, Wolf is plotting a crossover between the series and one of his NBC franchises (though which one is undetermined). That would mean FBI exists in the same universe as Law & Order, and Alana de la Garza appeared on Law & Order: SVU as Rubirosa, so that’ll be an interesting quirk.

But in terms of pure casting, this lateral move is a strong decision. De La Garza is a great actress, and her already having worked with Sisto is a plus since their characters will be sharing a decent amount of scenes together, too (his Jubal Valentine is the second-in-command).

Especially when you consider the time constraints—both series are returning in about two and a half months—the show went with the excellent performer already in their midst, and FBI season 2 will be better for it.
