What it means

If you’re a Kim Burgess fan, you’ve got every right to be frustrated with Chicago PD season 6. It may not have been intentionally planned this way, but season 6 often felt like Burgess was being pushed aside in favor of making Upton the female lead.

The normally street-smart Burgess was far too easily manipulated by Brennan in “Ride Along.” It’s true that Kim is sometimes too nice and wants to help, but any savvy Chicago PD fan could tell she was going to be abandoned by the Deputy Superintendent when things got tough. The only reason she got off the hook was a deus ex machina where Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) knew someone and could pull some strings.

Burgess’s personal life was even worse. After teasing Burzek fans last season, the show dumped that and moved on to Ruzek with Upton. All of Burgess’s character development in the first half of the season was “When will she find out about them?” instead of something for her.

And once it did come out, Kim was rushed into a quick fling with Blair, which was never developed enough for the audience to care. He ended up killed off rather fast for dramatic effect, which didn’t quite work either, because it was hard to understand how Burgess was so distraught over a guy she’d barely been dating.

All season long, she was placed into plots that didn’t seem to fit her at all, and she ended up with the short end of the stick because of it. Burgess can do a lot better.
